What paperwork should I bring to the audition?
If you register online, you should bring a copy of your audition registration confirmation and payment notification as proof of registration. If you uploaded an incorrect photo or document, you may bring the correct items with you to the audition. The audition check-in staff will be able to add your correct photo(s) or document(s) to your audition form.
If you register in person, you should bring a headshot and full-body first arabesque photograph. You will be required to complete a paper copy of the audition registration on site, which is available HERE. Audition registration is $50 and can be paid with cash or check. Credit cards are not accepted in person. Day-of registration is not guaranteed and will only be permitted if space allows in the audition class.
At what age, do I need to audition?
- For the Pre-Professional Program, dancers need to be 7 years old as of September 1st to audition.
- For the Professional Program, dancers should be 14 years old as of September 1st to audition. Houston Ballet Academy does not provide housing for students under 14 years old at the time of the program.

How do I know which audition class/age group to attend?
Auditions are held by age. Dancers should attend the audition for the age group that corresponds to their age at the time of the audition. The only exception to this rule is during our Audition Tour at sites other than Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. For non-Houston/Dallas/San Antonio sites, dancers that will be 12 years old by the start of Summer Intensive Program (even if they are not 12 by the time of the audition) may attend the audition for 12-year-old dancers.
What if I am not able to attend any scheduled audition?
A live audition is preferred over a video audition. Dancers not able to attend a scheduled live audition are allowed to submit a video audition through our online portal, Acceptd. Audition results for video auditions are conveyed within four weeks of the submission.
What can I expect during the audition?
The audition class will consist of barre, center, if applicable, pointe and men’s allegro.
Who will be adjudicating my audition?
Houston Ballet Academy artistic staff members.
What should I wear to the audition?
- Students who identify as female should wear a solid color leotard, pink or skin-tone tights, pink or skin-tone ballet shoes, and have their pointe shoes readily available.
- Students who identify as male should wear a solid color leotard or t-shirt, black or grey tights, and black or white ballet slippers.
- Students who identify as neither or both male and female may choose from one of the above.
How will I be notified of my audition results?
Audition results for live auditions are emailed within two weeks of the audition. Audition results for video auditions are emailed within four weeks of the submission. Do not call Houston Ballet Academy as results will be conveyed by email only.
Can I request a deadline extension and hold my spot for longer?
Registration for our programs is first come, first serve and will close once classes have reached capacity. Students must register by the stated deadline on their acceptance notification. Students wishing to attend the program that have missed their registration deadline may be placed on a waiting list.
Registration deposits are nonrefundable. Dancers who pay their deposit and then withdraw from the program will not be able to receive a refund.
